The New
York Mets are on a three game winning streak and have the most wins
at home of any team in baseball. The Mets have been a different team
at Citi Field and have won their last eight games at home. The
Padres are one of the more pleasant surprises of the season off to an
impressive 34-23 start. The have played well at home and on the
road.
The Mets
are starting Mike Pelfrey who has rebounded nicely after a slump in
his sophomore season. He is now 8-1 with a 2.39 ERA. He's looking
to continue his early season success with another quality start
against the Padres who he beat last Tuesday in San Diego with a
dominating 8 inning 8 strikeout 1 run performance.
The
Padres are going with Clayton Richard (4-3 2.87 ERA) who is enjoying
his first full season in the pitcher's paradise known as Petco Park.
He should feel comfortable pitching in Citi Field as the Great Wall
of Flushing has definitely kept home runs down. Richard pitched well
against the Mets last Wednesday giving up 1 in a six inning outing in
what turned in to a 5-1 extra inning victory.
The Mets
finally put Oliver Perez on the DL with what is being called a knee
injury though the league is going to look into the MRI to make sure
the Mets using pulling a phantom injury as an excuse to rid
themselves of one of the worst pitchers in baseball so far this
season. Luis Castillo was also recently put on the DL with a bruise
to his foot. Ruben Tejada is a good fielding replacement from the
minors and could easily be a more productive player than the slap
hitting Castillo. The Mets have also called up Jesus Feliciano who
was tearing up the International League to the tune of a .385
average. He is no prospect though he turned 31 on Sunday and he has
spent the last three seasons with the Mets AAA team. He should still
be more useful than the worthless Gary Matthews Jr who was designated
for assignment last week.
The
Padres are led by Adrian Gonzalez who leads the team with 13 HRs and
38 RBI. He is just 2-10 lifetime against Mike Pelfrey but those two
hits were homers. A nice story for the Padres is the development of
Chase Headley who looks to be improving after two mediocre seasons.
The
Padres were no hit for seven innings by Cole Hamels of the Phillies
yesterday but still rebounded to win the game on the strength of two
homers by Gonzalez.
An
interesting side note whenever the Mets play the Padres is Padres
closer Heath Bell. He has held a bit of a grudge against his former
team and really enjoys beating them.
The Mets
and Padres are both fairly low scoring teams and I could see that
continuing in this game with two quality starting pitchers going.
The weather should be beautiful with temperatures in the 60s and no
rain in the forecast. I like the Mets to continue their winning ways
at home and for the game to be a low scoring affair.

I'm gonna update this more as it gets closer to the start of the season
C - Santos vs Blanco vs Coste vs Thole vs ????
1B - Murphy vs Jacobs
2B - Castillo - yuck
SS - Reyes - looks healthy, huge season for him
3B - Wright - was last season all a mental issue for him?
LF - Bay - should do just fine at Citi Field, look for him to hit around .275, 28 HRs 105 RBI
CF - Pagan for now, Beltran hopefully by June
RF - Francouer - it'd be nice if he learned to work a count a bit, I wouldn't count on it. Not a fan of his at all.
Rotation
Santana - Will be back to his ace form this year
Pelfrey - needs a second pitch and better D around him. Reyes should help a bit
Perez - was last year due to injury or just awfulness?
Maine - I think he's better suited to be a setup guy. Even at his best has never been more than a 6 inning pitcher
Niese or Nieve - Both looked ok last year before injury
Bullpen
KRod - awful 2nd half last year. Was it due to injury or just not caring very much in a lost season?
Setup - Parnell, Green & Escobar
